जब मैंने पहली बार UPSC की तैयारी शुरू करने का फ़ैसला किया, तो पहले दिन मै एक bookshop में गया। वहा दुकानदार ने मुझे 15 books recommend कीं जो की कुल ₹8,000 का बिल बना। घर आकर जब एक senior UPSC aspirant से पूछा, तो उसने हँसते हुए कहा ‘पहले 6 महीने सिर्फ NCERT पढ़ो। बाकी सब बाद में। उस दिन से मैंने सोचा किसी को यह गलती नहीं करनी चाहिए। इस article में वही guidance है।
1. UPSC Books का Golden Rule पहले यह समझो
UPSC में books की quality नहीं revision की quality matter करती है। जो topper 5 books को 5 बार पढ़ता है, वो उस aspirant से हमेशा आगे रहता है जो 50 books को एक बार पढ़ता है।
कुछ important points:
- पहले 6 महीने तुम सिर्फ NCERT की books पढ़ो
- पूरी UPSC journey में 5 से 7 standard books काफ़ी हैं
- हर book minimum 3 बार पढ़ो
- NCERT की books free में download होती हैं
Book Buying Trap: पहले दिन से Laxmikanth, Bipin Chandra, Ramesh Singh सब उठा लेना। इन books को बिना NCERT background के पढ़ना यह time waste है। NCERT = Foundation। Standard Books = Building। Order मत बदलो।
Beginners के लिए 3-Phase Approach:
- Phase 1 (Month 1-6): सिर्फ NCERT Class 6 से 12 तक
- Phase 2 (Month 6-12): Subject-wise Standard Books
- Phase 3 (Ongoing): Current Affairs + Optional Subject इस order को follow करो confusion नहीं होगा।
2. Step1 NCERT Books (Foundation पहले 6 महीने)
UPSC में select होने वाले हर topper की एक common बात होती है NCERT को thoroughly पढ़ा है। NCERT boring लगती है, slow लगती है लेकिन यही असली foundation है।

UPSC Prelims और Mains दोनों में History बहुत important है। Class 6 (Our Pasts 1) से Class 12 (Themes in Indian History) तक सब systematically पढ़ो। Modern History (Class 10-12) सबसे ज़्यादा important है Freedom Struggle से directly questions आते हैं।
Reading Tip: NCERT History पढ़ते वक्त dates रटने की कोशिश मत करो events को story की तरह connect करते जाओ। जब events एक narrative में connect होते हैं तो याद भी रहते हैं और Mains answer writing में भी help करते हैं।

NCERT Download Tip: सब NCERT books ncert.nic.in से free PDF में download हो सकती हैं। Small city students internet café से download करो, print निकलवाओ। एक बार print की cost बार-बार पढ़ने का फ़ायदा।
3. Step 2 Standard Books (Subject-wise)
NCERT complete होने के बाद subject-wise standard books शुरू करो। यह books deeper understanding देती हैं और Mains answer writing के लिए ज़रूरी हैं।
Book 06 Indian Polity M. Laxmikanth Publisher: M. Laxmikanth | McGraw Hill | ₹600–700 Tags: UPSC की Bible | 3 बार पढ़ो
UPSC Polity का Bible। GS Paper 2 का 70% इसी book से cover होता है। Constitution, Parliament, Judiciary, State Governments, Federalism, Local Governments सब encyclopedic detail में। इसे कम से कम 3 बार पढ़ो। Beginners के लिए यह सबसे important standard book है।
Important: Laxmikanth को NCERT Political Science पढ़ने के बाद ही उठाओ। बिना NCERT background के Laxmikanth heavy लगती है और concepts clear नहीं होते। Sequence ज़रूरी है।
Book 07 India’s Struggle for Independence Bipin Chandra Publisher: Bipin Chandra | Penguin Books | ₹400–500 Tags: Modern History Must | Narrative Style
Modern History और Freedom Struggle के लिए standard book। UPSC में Freedom Movement से बहुत questions आते हैं यह book उन सबका answer देती है। Narrative style में लिखी है पढ़ने में interesting लगती है। Spectrum के साथ या alternative के रूप में use करो।

Small City Students के लिए: District library में Laxmikanth, Bipin Chandra, Ramesh Singh यह सब books available हैं। BHU Library (Varanasi), Patna University Library, Allahabad University Library इन जगहों पर free में पढ़ सकते हो। पैसे नहीं हैं तो library जाओ excuse मत बनाओ।
7. Common Mistakes जो Beginners करते हैं
Mistake 1: NCERT Skip करके Standard Books से शुरू करना यह सबसे common और सबसे harmful mistake है। Laxmikanth बिना NCERT Political Science के Bipin Chandra बिना NCERT History के यह भवन बिना नींव के बनाने जैसा है। पहले 6 महीने सिर्फ NCERT। कोई shortcut नहीं।
Mistake 2: बहुत सारी Books खरीदकर कोई भी पूरी न करना 15 books का stack, हर एक 50 pages पढ़ी। यह preparation नहीं है। 5 सही books को 3-3 बार पढ़ना 15 books को एक बार पढ़ने से infinitely बेहतर है। Less books, more revisions यही UPSC formula है।
Mistake 3: Ethics (GS 4) को Last में छोड़ना बहुत से UPSC beginners GS 4 को “बाद में देखेंगे” कहकर ignore करते हैं और Mains में 250 marks का paper weak रह जाता है। Day 1 से Lexicon शुरू करो थोड़ा-थोड़ा रोज़। Case Studies practice से यह paper strong होता है।
Mistake 4: Current Affairs को Bulk में पढ़ना 6 महीने newspapers नहीं पढ़े, exam से 1 महीने पहले सब पढ़ने की कोशिश। यह काम नहीं करता। Current Affairs daily habit है bulk में नहीं होती। The Hindu या Dainik Jagran रोज़ 30-45 minutes यह habit Day 1 से बनाओ।
Mistake 5: Answer Writing Practice नहीं करना Books पढ़ते रहो, answer लिखने की practice नहीं। Mains में 250 words के answers 3 घंटे में लिखने होते हैं यह skill practice से आती है, पढ़ने से नहीं। Day 1 से रोज़ 2-3 answers लिखो चाहे quality poor हो। Improvement होगी।

Q1. UPSC के लिए कुल कितना budget चाहिए books पर?
NCERT free हैं। Standard books में Laxmikanth (₹650), Ramesh Singh (₹650), Shankar Environment (₹380), Lexicon Ethics (₹420), Bipin Chandra (₹450) total approximately ₹2,500। Optional books अलग optional decide होने पर। Online test series ₹800-₹1,200। Total preparation budget ₹4,000-₹5,000 sufficient है।
Q2. Spectrum और Bipin Chandra Modern History के लिए कौन सा बेहतर?
Spectrum (A Brief History of Modern India) concise और exam-focused है Prelims के लिए excellent। Bipin Chandra (India’s Struggle for Independence) detailed और narrative है Mains answer writing के लिए better। Ideal combination: Prelims के लिए Spectrum + Mains के लिए Bipin Chandra। Time limited है तो Spectrum से शुरू करो।
Q3. Hindi medium में UPSC books available हैं?
हाँ NCERT सब books Hindi में available हैं (free download)। Laxmikanth की Hindi translation available है। Ramesh Singh Hindi में available है। Bipin Chandra की Hindi version भी है। Drishti IAS पर Hindi में excellent notes मिलते हैं। Hindi medium में UPSC crack हुआ है books की कमी नहीं है।
Q4. NCERT पढ़ने में कितना time लगता है?
सब NCERT (History + Geography + Polity + Economics + Science Class 6-12) पढ़ने में genuinely 4-6 महीने लगते हैं अगर रोज़ 3-4 घंटे पढ़ो। Notes बनाते हुए पढ़ो slow लेकिन effective। जो NCERT को seriously पढ़ता है वो standard books में बहुत faster progress करता है।
Q5. क्या Coaching Notes standard books को replace कर सकते हैं?
नहीं। Coaching notes secondary source हैं primary books replace नहीं होती। Coaching notes में summary होती है, depth नहीं। Mains answer writing में depth चाहिए होती है जो original books से आती है। Coaching notes quick revision के लिए good हैं लेकिन पहली reading हमेशा original book से करो।
Q6. Geography के लिए Atlas ज़रूरी है?
हाँ Geography पढ़ते वक्त map देखना बहुत ज़रूरी है। Oxford Student Atlas for India (₹350) या Orient Blackswan Atlas इनमें से कोई एक लो। Map से places, rivers, mountains, passes सब mentally place होते हैं। Map के बिना Geography मुश्किल है।
Q7. Laxmikanth को कितनी बार पढ़ना चाहिए?
Minimum 3 बार और हर revision में नई depth आती है। पहली reading: concept समझो। दूसरी reading: connections बनाओ। तीसरी reading: revision और important points mark करो। Toppers Laxmikanth को 5-6 बार पढ़ते हैं। “एक बार पढ़ लिया” यह UPSC में नहीं चलता।
Last Baat Beginners और Small City Students के लिए
UPSC crack करने के लिए ₹50,000 की coaching या ₹20,000 की books नहीं चाहिए। NCERT (free) + 5-6 standard books (₹2,500) + Daily newspaper + YouTube + Consistency = Selection। Varanasi, Patna, Lucknow इन शहरों की libraries और घरों से IAS निकले हैं। आज से शुरू करो NCERT Class 6 History उठाओ, पहला chapter पढ़ो। वो पहला कदम सबसे important है। All the best!
